Over 1,500 iPhones Worth ₹12 Crore Stolen from a Truck in Madhya Pradesh
A significant theft has taken place in Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh, where over 1,600 iPhones, valued at around ₹12 crore, were stolen from a container truck. The incident occurred while the truck was en route from Haryana to Chennai. The police revealed that the theft happened on August 15, but it came to light only recently.
On August 14, a container truck loaded with more than 1,600 iPhones departed from Gurugram, located on the outskirts of Delhi. The truck was attacked upon entering Sagar district on August 15. The attack occurred approximately 35 km from the district headquarters. According to the police, the culprits drugged the truck driver, covered his mouth with adhesive tape, and locked him inside the container before making off with the stolen iPhones.
The incident was reported to the police by the driver as soon as he regained consciousness. Pramod Verma, the Inspector General (IG), confirmed that the driver alerted the police about the theft. Following initial investigations, the police suspect the involvement of the security guard assigned to the truck. It is believed that the guard might have orchestrated the heist by informing his associates, leading to the attack on the truck.
The investigation is ongoing, with efforts to locate and apprehend the culprits. In addition to the main investigation, senior police officials have taken action against three police personnel who failed to register the driver's complaint promptly.
To support the investigation, the police are analyzing CCTV footage from the area where the iPhones were stolen. Video footage from the truck’s route has also been obtained for review. Despite the severity of the theft, it is noteworthy that Apple, the manufacturer of the stolen iPhones, has not yet contacted the police regarding this incident.
This is not the first instance of such a large-scale mobile phone theft. Four years ago, a similar incident occurred in Tamil Nadu near Krishnagiri. In that case, thieves hijacked a container truck carrying mobile phones, tied up the driver and cleaners, and escaped with the truck, which was carrying approximately 14,400 phones valued at ₹15 crore.
The theft of over 1,600 iPhones worth ₹12 crore in Madhya Pradesh highlights the ongoing challenge of securing high-value goods during transportation. With investigations underway, it is crucial for logistics companies to implement robust security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
